College Introduction
The College of Data Science was established in November 2016 and launched on 12 January 2017. The development orientation of the college is senior talent training, basic theory innovation, interdisciplinary integration and obvious industry characteristics. Relying on the foundation of computer science and technology, statistics, computational mathematics, and informatics, the college is committed to scientific research, talent training and industrial innovation in the fields related to big data. Combined with the national strategy and the needs of Shanxi's emerging industries, the college has formed an advantageous discipline group and a characteristic specialty group centring on“Project 1331”. Applied basic research and research on common key technologies research are carried out to create a regional source of data science research and development, a new plateau for training data professionals, a platform for data pooling and sharing and a new type of think tank for data policy. It will promote the technology transfer and industrialization of the achievements, push forward the development of Shanxi big data industry chain, and create a new Academy of Engineering with deep integration of production, teaching, research and application.
The college has fully implemented the tutorial system for undergraduates, relying on the innovation, competition and participation in teachers’scientific research, the undergraduates can receive the training of postgraduates’basic abilities in advance, and the ideological and political implementation of the curriculum can be further promoted simultaneously. The index requirements of talent cultivation are as follows: the third year students should have practical achievements such as patents, papers, soft ware copyrights and productions; the senior students should carry out the graduation project six months in advance, the defense should basically reach the professional master level. To further improve students’enthusiasm of professional study and practice, improve the rate of graduation, employment rate and employment quality, and truly create a new engineering talent innovation project.
In the college, there are four departments, including Department of data science and technology, Department of artificial intelligence science and engineering, Department of information and big data engineering, and Big data experimental center, four undergraduate, majors such as data science and big data technology, artificial intelligence, intelligent medical engineering and software Engineering, three master programs such as data science and technology, artificial intelligence science, and software engineering, and one doctoral program in data science and technology. There are 848 undergraduate students and 165 master’s and doctoral students.
There are 50 staffs, including 7 professors (one selected national talent project, one expert enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, one top young talents of Shanxi province and one academic leader of Shanxi province) , 5 associate professors, and 32 lecturers, the doctoral rate of teachers is 100% . The college now has 5 doctoral supervisor and 12 master supervisor, and has been selected in the first group of experimental units of "China Computer Federation dual-tutorial Postgraduate Joint Training Program” (there 10 institutions in the first group of experimental units around nationwide) .
The college possesses teaching and research platforms such as "scientific cloud computing center of Taiyuan University of technology", "Shanxi data and application center of high-resolution earth observation satellite system", "Shanxi spatial information network engineering technology research center", "Shanxi spatial information network graduate education innovation center", "Shanxi industrial intelligent big data graduate Education Innovation Center". The college serves as the vice president unit of "China big data industry application collaborative innovation alliance".
The college will give full play to the resource advantages of the main body of enterprise innovation and the concentration of innovation elements in colleges and universities, and build a platform for cooperation between colleges and enterprises, industry, university and research, establishing the talent training mode of “School-enterprise cooperation and project education”with special features. With the Beijing Institute of big data to build “Beijing-jin Big Data Collaborative Research Center”; with the Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. to build “Shanxi Big Data Innovation Talent Center”; With the state research think tank to build “Shanxi state research big data think tank”; with Shanxi Unicom to build “Big data joint laboratory”; with Jinzhong bank to build “Financial big data laboratory”. In 2020, as the leading College of Big Data College and Shanxi Cultural Tourism Investment Holding Group Co. , Ltd. established “Taiyuan Institute of technology-wenlu Group Intelligent Tourism and Public Security Big Data Research Institute”, to be one of the first 20 industrial research institutes of the university, to be the lead institute and the Agricultural Genomics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Shenzhen) to co-establish the Institute of Genomics and characterization of Big Data; And Shenzhen Youbixuan Technology Co. , Ltd. to build artificial intelligence joint laboratory.
The college focuses on serving the transformation and development of Shanxi province and the local economic construction of Shanxi province. According to four major projects of “Yunju Shanxi”, “Yunhui Shanxi”, “Yunzhi Shanxi”and “Yun’an District Shanxi”, the college builds intelligent big data research center, industrial big data research center, security big data research center, and medical big data research center, etc. Focusing on the four fields of data resources, data application, data industry and data security, the college carries out the researches on Artificial Intelligence Computing, intelligent big data system, intelligent perception and big data, natural language processing and understanding, and intelligent manufacturing, and promotes the applications in industrial big data, medical big data, spatial information big data, public security big data, energy big data and other industries.
